Zero-emission heavy-duty registrations

New registrations of battery-electric and hydrogen trucks and buses: Germany month by month (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, FZ 28), the EU year by year (European Alternative Fuels Observatory). Switch data source, drive type, vehicle class and period, or show the counts as a share of all new registrations; hover any bar for the exact numbers.

EAFO scope: EU27; trucks are EU categories N2 and N3 (over 3.5 t). The current year is a running year-to-date figure (faded bar).

Data: European Commission, European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), 20182026 (YTD), retrieved Aug 2026; own calculation and presentation.

KBA publishes about three weeks, EAFO about six weeks after period end; the current EU year is a year-to-date figure. Own calculation and presentation; vehicle-class definitions differ between the two sources.

How it works — physics, data sources, scope

Two sources, one view. Germany: Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, FZ 28, with monthly new registrations per KBA vehicle class (Lkw, Zugmaschinen, Kraftomnibusse); the hydrogen figure combines fuel-cell and other hydrogen drives. Europe: EU27 annual new registrations of N2/N3 trucks and buses from the EAFO. The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) is the European Commission's key reference portal for alternative fuels, infrastructure and vehicles in Europe.

Pipeline. Both sources are downloaded each month and parsed by small Python scripts into one compact JSON per source; the page is fully static, with no API calls at runtime. The charts are hand-rolled SVG. Hover or tap a bar for exact numbers; a data table behind each chart carries the same figures for screen readers.

Scope. Battery-electric (BEV) and hydrogen only: no plug-in hybrids, no gas drives, no passenger cars or vans as far as the class systems allow. Class definitions differ between the sources, so the German and European series are shown as published and never combined; the current EU year is a year-to-date figure.
