How it works — physics, data sources, scope
Two sources, one view. Germany: Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, FZ 28, with monthly new registrations per KBA vehicle class — Lkw (which includes vans up to 3.5 t), Zugmaschinen (which include agricultural tractors) and Kraftomnibusse; the hydrogen figure combines fuel-cell and other hydrogen drives. Europe: EU27 annual new registrations of N2/N3 trucks (over 3.5 t) and M2/M3 buses from the EAFO; the current year is a running year-to-date figure, drawn as a faded bar. The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) is the European Commission's key reference portal for alternative fuels, infrastructure and vehicles in Europe.
Data updates. Both sources are retrieved monthly. Hover or tap a bar for exact numbers; a data table carries the same figures for screen readers. The retrieval date and reporting period are shown below the chart.
Share view. Share = battery-electric or hydrogen registrations divided by all new registrations in the selected KBA class(es), same period, all drive types. In the monthly views the thin line is the trailing 12-month figure: the rolling average for counts, the rolling share (sums, not a mean of shares) for percentages.
Scope. Battery-electric (BEV) and hydrogen only: no plug-in hybrids, no gas drives, no passenger cars or vans as far as the class systems allow. Class definitions differ between the sources, so the German and European series are shown as published and never combined; the current EU year is a year-to-date figure.
